Discoveries is an annual publication created for UC San Diego Health Sciences documenting the achievements of the one of the nation's brightest healthcare enterprises.
The 48-page 2020 issue of Discoveries features a gold foil logo and 3 distinctly different illustrations with tone-on-tone foil. Each of these medical illustrations corresponds with the 3-feature stories inside the issue.
Every issue of Discoveries presents a similar challenge: how to bring each story to life visually without the availability of a large library of images. Similar to crafting a brand, finding this solution involves getting familiar with the story and creating custom illustrations, typographic applications and photographic treatments that enhance the storytelling experience for the reader.
